Narwhal API vs sec-api.io

sec-api.io is a deep SEC EDGAR service: search, full-text search, filing downloads and a real-time stream, with filings back to 1993. Narwhal Filings API returns standardised financial statements and holders of 5% or more for the US from 2009, plus Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the EU, EEA and UK.

At a glance

sec-api.io facts come from its own pricing page, product index, MCP documentation and terms, read on 3 November 2026. It publishes no monthly call quota, and its Download API rate appears three different ways, so this page quotes neither. Narwhal API is owned and operated by Nusantara Ventures, LLC.

Why teams switch

Your companies are not all on EDGAR

sec-api.io says it covers all filings filed with the SEC, so a foreign issuer appears only through its SEC forms. Narwhal reads Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, European and UK filers from their own regulators. Korea reaches about half of listed companies so far.

You want to ship on a free tier

The sec-api.io free key stops after 100 calls in total, and its terms limit it to personal, non-commercial use. Narwhal Free gives 5,000 requests every month and allows commercial apps. When the month runs out it returns a 429 and charges nothing.

Filings are one part of the data you buy

The same Narwhal key reads economics for 37 countries, FX for 144 currencies, calendars and stock listings from 42 exchanges. REST and MCP draw on one quota.

When they are the better pick

sec-api.io is the better pick for work on EDGAR itself. History runs from 1993 with over 20 million filings, and a real-time stream delivers new filings in under 300 milliseconds on every plan. Full-Text Search covers filings and exhibits published since 2001, on Business and Enterprise. It also offers filing downloads, a 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K section extractor, bulk datasets and form-level APIs such as 13F. Narwhal has no full-text search of filing text and starts US history in 2009.

Questions

Does sec-api.io cover Japanese or Korean filings?

The pages checked say it covers all filings filed with the SEC and mention no EDINET or DART. Narwhal covers Japan with over 3,800 companies and Korea with about half of listed companies so far.

Can Narwhal replace sec-api.io for full-text search?

No. Narwhal finds companies and lists their filings, with no full-text search of filing text. sec-api.io offers Full-Text Search on Business and Enterprise, over filings published since 2001.

How many calls does a sec-api.io plan include?

It does not say. The pricing page lists per-second rates for each API and 50 GB a month of downloads on Personal or 100 GB on Business, with extra volume at $0.30 per GB.

Can I use the sec-api.io free key in a product?

The terms limit the free tier to personal, non-commercial purposes and bar showing the data to third parties. Narwhal Free allows commercial app use.

How far back do SEC filings go in Narwhal?

US filings start in 2009. The plan sets how much you can read, from 12 months on Free to full history on Pro. sec-api.io reaches back to 1993 on all plans.
