Choose Narwhal API when
You need a curated set of Japan CPI, inflation, labour, GDP, and merchandise-trade operations in the same response model used for Narwhal's other published countries.
Official Japanese statistics
e-Stat is Japan's official government-statistics portal and exposes its statistical data through an API. Narwhal provides a smaller normalized economics contract for Japan alongside other countries and adjacent financial-data APIs. Some Narwhal Japan series use e-Stat or the Statistics Dashboard as an official source.
Choose e-Stat for the breadth and detail of official Japanese statistics. Choose Narwhal when its published Japan indicators fit your application and you want the same normalized REST and MCP workflow across countries, FX, equities, SEC filing metadata, Palmoil, and calendars.
You need a curated set of Japan CPI, inflation, labour, GDP, and merchandise-trade operations in the same response model used for Narwhal's other published countries.
You need the wider Japanese government-statistics catalogue, survey tables, regional detail, classifications, metadata, or a dataset that Narwhal has not normalized.
Narwhal is a convenience and normalization layer for a limited published set, not a replacement for e-Stat's full official catalogue. Check Narwhal's Japan coverage before choosing it for a specific series.
| Requirement | Narwhal API | e-Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Role | A normalized multi-country API that republishes selected official observations with explicit source metadata. | Japan's portal for official government statistics and the primary catalogue for its published tables. |
| Japan economics | Nine published operations covering CPI, inflation, labour, GDP, and merchandise trade for Japan. | A broad catalogue of Japanese statistics organized by theme, government organization, database tables, and downloadable files. |
| Response model | Stable JSON resources use shared country, period, unit, source, freshness, and limitation semantics. | Version 3.0 provides statistical data and metadata in XML, JSON, and CSV, using e-Stat table and classification structures. |
| Access | One Narwhal key and request quota cover REST and hosted MCP. | API use requires an e-Stat account, an issued application ID, and attribution when the resulting service is published. |
| Adjacent data | The same account also covers FX, selected US equities, SEC filing metadata, Palmoil, and public holidays. | Its purpose is the Japanese government-statistics catalogue rather than a cross-domain financial API bundle. |
