Public holiday methodology and coverage

Public holidays, not guaranteed closures

The calendar API is available for the published country-years below. Events use local civil dates. They do not determine bank opening hours, exchange sessions, settlement dates or whether a particular employer closes.

The scope field distinguishes national holidays, regional holidays, bank holidays, government calendars and collective leave. subdivision_codes is empty for a nationwide holiday, which describes geography, not whether every employer or sector observes the event. Observed/substitute status is left out when the source does not state it.

Holiday names are presented in English, with the source's original local name retained in local_name when the reviewed source provides one.

Published country-year coverage

Australia currently covers New South Wales only. France excludes additional regional holidays; the U.S. calendar covers federal employees. UK bank holidays retain the three published divisions. China excludes make-up working days, and Indonesia separates national holidays from collective leave.

The 1900–2200 input range is a validation boundary, not historical coverage. An unavailable year must not be interpreted as a year with no holidays.

Official sources and attribution

Published calendars use reviewed official documents and factual date tables. Each publication is bound to the reviewed source capture, reuse evidence and declared scope. Source approval does not imply that every year or region is covered.

• ARG: Argentina.gob.ar · official national holidays JSON.

  The 16 dates come from Argentina.gob.ar's national holiday calendar, licensed under CC BY 4.0. Fixed and movable national holidays are included, with moved holidays shown on their observed dates. English names are paired with the source's Spanish local names. Tourist bridge days, group-specific non-working days and regional or sector closures are excluded. Source licence and attribution

  This guide covers New South Wales public and bank holidays only. It does not describe calendars for other Australian states or territories.

• BRA: Brazil federal government official schedule.

  The 10 dates follow MGI Ordinance 11.460/2025 for federal ministries, autonomous agencies and public foundations. Optional days, partial closures, and state or municipal holidays are excluded. Dates are shown as listed in the ordinance; no substitute dates are inferred. This scope does not establish a universal private-sector or bank calendar, or cover every federal-office closure. • CAN: Government of Canada · Canada Labour Code.

  This calendar follows Canada Labour Code Part III, Division V and the related federal holiday statutes. Federal enactments are reproduced under the Reproduction of Federal Law Order, SI/97-5; this is not an official version. Good Friday is cross-checked against the GOV.UK bank-holiday source, which is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. The dates are nominal holidays for federally regulated employers; employer or collective-agreement substitutions and alternate days for non-working days depend on the employer and employee context, so observed is null. • CHN: State Council official notice.

  The dates follow the State Council's 2026 holiday arrangements. Each row is one day off within a break, including weekend days inside that break. The 33 dates span New Year, Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn and National Day. Compensating weekend workdays are excluded. Dates follow the announced breaks rather than a separate list of substitute holidays. Source licence and attribution

• DEU: Deutsche Bundesbank · nationwide public holidays.

  The nine dates come from the nationwide section of Deutsche Bundesbank's 2026 holiday calendar. State and municipal holidays, TARGET/T2S settlement closures and Bundesbank-only non-business days are excluded. Dates and holiday names follow that section, including dates on weekends. No substitute dates are inferred, so this is not a complete calendar for any individual state. Source licence and attribution

  The dates cover common national statutory holidays in metropolitan France. Regional additions are excluded.

  General holidays and statutory employee holidays are different calendars. The table preserves the official general-holiday schedule and its substitute dates. • IDN: Indonesian three-minister decree · factual dates.

  The dates follow the three-minister decree signed on 15 September 2026. It lists 18 national holiday dates and 8 cuti bersama dates as separate categories. The national count excludes cuti bersama. Dates are kept as decreed; a Sunday holiday is not automatically moved to Monday. Banks and other public services may arrange staffing separately. Source licence and attribution

• ITA: Gazzetta Ufficiale · national statutory holiday laws.

  This national baseline follows Law 260/1949 and its amendments, including Law 151/2025 which adds 4 October from 2026. Easter Monday is derived from the statutory Monday-after-Easter rule. Ordinary Sundays, regional and municipal observances, patron-saint days, bank holidays and exchange closures are excluded. Statutory holidays that fall on a Sunday remain included. • MEX: PROFEDET · Ley Federal del Trabajo Article 74.

  This calendar follows PROFEDET’s summary of Federal Labour Law Article 74. The 6 June ordinary federal election day is included from the Council-approved INE 2027 electoral calendar, Annex 2. Dates are statutory labour-rest dates, not a universal bank-closure calendar; no weekend substitute is inferred. Source licence and attribution

  A public holiday does not automatically give employees a day off. Time off depends on the collective labour agreement or employment contract.   Observed weekdays apply when an employee does not normally work on the weekend holiday. The actual date and its observed date are not two holiday entitlements.   The schedule includes public holidays on weekends and the source-designated observed date. It does not add a substitute for every Saturday holiday. Employee rest-day entitlements can differ. • EST: Estonian Public Holidays and Days of National Importance Act · Riigi Teataja.

  The dates follow Estonia’s Public Holidays and Days of National Importance Act. Easter and Pentecost follow the statutory Gregorian rules. No substitute weekday is added because the Act does not prescribe one. • IRL: Irish Statute Book · Organisation of Working Time Act 1997.

  The dates follow the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 and S.I. No. 50/2022. Easter Monday is included; Good Friday is not a public holiday. No automatic Monday substitution is inferred. • LVA: Latvia Law On Public Holidays · Likumi.lv.

  The dates follow Latvia’s Law On Public Holidays, Commemoration Days, and Celebration Days. Mother’s Day and Pentecost are included because the law names them as public holidays; commemoration days and regional events are excluded. The 2027 dates do not trigger the law’s additional following-working-day rule for 4 May or 18 November. • LTU: Republic of Lithuania Labour Code · Article 123.

  The dates follow Article 123 of Lithuania’s Labour Code. Easter Sunday and Monday, the first Sunday of May, and the first Sunday of June are calculated from the statutory rules. Sundays named by the law remain included. • ZAF: South African Government Gazette 52178 · official notice.

  The gazette lists 22 March and 27 December as Public holiday. Both dates are included; the API preserves the published name without inferring an observed flag. The 26 April special school holiday and school-term dates are excluded. Later official proclamations may change the schedule. • POL: Polish Act on days free from work.

  The dates follow the consolidated Polish Act on days free from work (Dz.U. 2025 poz. 296), including Christmas Eve under the amendment effective 1 February 2025. Easter, Pentecost and Corpus Christi use the statutory dates; no substitute weekday is added. The Polish Act is an official normative act; its statutory holiday facts and labels are used under the Polish Copyright Act exclusion for normative acts and official documents. • CZE: Czech Act No. 245/2000 Coll..

  The dates follow Act No. 245/2000 Coll. on state and other holidays and Act No. 359/2015 Coll., which added Good Friday effective 1 January 2016. No substitute weekday is added. Only statutory holiday facts and labels from the official normative texts are used. • HRV: Croatian Holidays Act.

  The dates follow the Croatian Holidays Act (NN 110/2019 and reviewed amendments). Easter and Corpus Christi use the statutory dates; the Act expressly provides that Sunday holidays do not transfer to the next day. • PRT: Diário da República Portuguese statutory public holidays.

  The dates follow Labour Code Article 234(1), as restored by Law 8/2016. Good Friday may be observed on another locally significant Easter date under Article 234(2); Article 234(3) requires specific legislation for Monday observance. No local alternative or automatic Monday substitution is inferred. • AUT: Austria Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957 § 1.

  The 13 dates follow section 1 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957, published by Austria's RIS legal information service. Movable feasts are dated using Gregorian Easter. Ordinary Sundays, personal holidays and regional patron days are excluded. Holidays remain on their statutory dates, including weekends; no substitute dates are inferred. • BEL: Belgium Royal Decree 18 April 1974 article 1.

  The 10 dates follow article 1 of the Royal Decree of 18 April 1974, published by Justel. When a holiday falls on a Sunday or usual rest day, the replacement is set by the employer or sector and is not listed here. Community holidays and 26 December are excluded. • COL: Colombia Ley 51 de 1983 article 1.

  The 18 dates follow article 1 of Law 51 of 1983, published by Colombia's public-service department. Under the Emiliani rule, 8 holidays move to Monday in 2026 and are shown on their observed dates. Dates already falling on the required Monday are not marked as moved. Ordinary Sundays, election days and regional observances are excluded. Source licence and attribution

• DNK: Danmarks Nationalbank closing days.

  The 12 dates are the closing days published by Danmarks Nationalbank. This is a central-bank calendar, not a general statutory public-holiday list. The unnamed bank closures are identified as the day after Ascension Day and New Year's Eve. Dates follow the bank's list; unlisted weekend closures and inferred substitute dates are excluded. • ESP: Spain BOE-A-2025-21667 fiestas laborales 2026.

  The eight dates are shared by every autonomous community, Ceuta and Melilla in BOE-A-2025-21667. Regional and local holidays, Holy Thursday and substitute Mondays are excluded. The annex does not list 1 November or 6 December, which fall on Sundays in 2026. Dates are retained from the annex without adding observed substitutes. Source licence and attribution

  The 11 dates follow Labour Code article L.232-2, published by Legilux. Europe Day on 9 May is also documented in parliamentary paper 7399. The table retains statutory dates, including holidays on Sundays. Compensatory days granted to individual employees are excluded because they do not have a single nationwide observed date. • NOR: Norges Bank settlement system closing days.

  The 11 dates follow Norges Bank's published settlement-system calendar. Constitution Day on 17 May is retained even though it falls on a Sunday. Christmas Eve is a settlement closing day, not a statutory public holiday. Unlisted weekend closures are excluded, and no substitute dates are inferred. This is a bank settlement calendar rather than a general public-holiday list. Source licence and attribution

• SVK: Slovakia Act No. 241/1993 Coll. §§ 1-2 and 4b.

  The 11 dates follow Act 241/1993, sections 1, 2 and 4b, as published by Slov-Lex. In 2026, 8 May and 15 September are suspended as days of rest. The state holidays on 1 September, 28 October and 17 November do not grant statutory rest and are excluded. Ordinary Sundays and memorial days are excluded. • SWE: Sweden Lag (1989:253) om allmänna helgdagar.

  The 13 dates follow Act 1989:253, published through the Swedish Parliament's open data. Easter Day and Whit Sunday are included because the Act names them; ordinary Sundays are excluded. Midsummer Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are customary days off and are not counted. Dates follow the statutory rules without adding substitute days. Source licence and attribution

• TWN: Taiwan DGPA 115 (ROC) government office calendar CSV.

  The dates come from the DGPA government-office calendar, released under Taiwan's Open Government Data License 1.0. The 22 dates include 6 substitutes marked as observed. The source does not identify which holiday each substitute replaces. Ordinary weekends are excluded. This public-sector calendar does not establish private-sector, bank or exchange closures. Source changes require review before replacement dates can be published. Required source credits are retained here; provider page layouts and artwork are not part of the API data.

Updates and missing coverage

Weekly source checks look for changes. A successful check alone is not proof of new dates. A failed refresh preserves the previous approved publication; revoked approval prevents it from being served.

An unpublished country-year calendar returns 404 calendar_not_published; a calendar that cannot be served safely right now returns 503 calendar_coverage_unavailable. The date endpoint can return no matches only within a published year. The next endpoint searches the requested year and, only when needed, the following year. It never guesses unpublished dates.
